Dental
The McChord Field Dental Clinic is operated by the U.S. Army Dental Command. General dentistry and selected specialty services are provided for active duty personnel. For after-hours dental emergencies, patients will need to contact the Madigan Army Medical Center Emergency Department.
Procedures performed include:
- Examinations
- Cleanings (prophylaxis)
- Preventive services (fluoride, sealants, instruction)
- Tooth fillings (restorative)
- Root canals (endodontics)
- Gum disease treatment (periodontics)
- Crown and bridge, as needed
- Extractions (oral surgery)
- Removable dentures, as needed
- Referral for complex oral rehabilitation, as needed
Patients who have the following conditions will be triaged and/or treated:
- Bleeding
- Swelling
- Pain that cannot be relieved by pain medicine
- Minor trauma/injury
- Severe trauma/injury to the face or jaw
- Any potentially life-threatening condition
The following are generally not considered to be dental emergencies:
- Loose teeth (adult or baby teeth) unless associated with trauma/injury
- Loose permanent or temporary crowns
- Broken fillings or teeth that occur while eating
- Minor gum irritation
The TRICARE Family Member Dental Plan is dental insurance for family members of active duty personnel for care by civilian dentists. Active duty personnel are encouraged to enroll their family members in the TRICARE Family Member Dental Plan to avoid paying full price for their family members' dental care. Additionally there is a retiree TRICARE Dental insurance program that can help offset the cost of dental treatment, please contact Tricare for more information and/or to sign up.
Dental Options Outside of Military Dental Clinics
For dental care outside of a military dental clinic, TRICARE offers dental coverage for service members, families and survivors. Additionally, retired service members, their families and certain survivors may qualify to purchase dental coverage through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program.
